Mister Spencer Turns 1!!!
Posted in Family on 03/18/2008 01:19 pm by CaceyLast Saturday friends and family gathered to join us in celebrating Spencer’s 1st birthday. We held a circus themed party – which included a clown, face painting, bubbles, hula hoops, a circus train craft and of course peanuts and popcorn! I had lots of fun planning it and was thrilled that although Spencer probably had no idea what all the commotion was about, he really seemed to enjoy himself!
We started off with the traditional Korean Tol celebration in honor of Spencer’s Korean heritage. This is the practice of dressing the child in their hanbok (traditional Korean outfit), and setting them on a table with different objects to choose from. The object they show interest in and reach for is supposed to tell something about their future. Such as…
-bow and arrow or sword: the child will become a warrior
-needle and thread: the child will live long
-book, pencil, or related items: the child will become a successful scholar
-white rice cake: purity
-red rice cake: protection from evil
-money: the child will become rich
-ruler, needle, scissors: the child will be talented with his/her hands
-knife: the child will be a good cook
Aaron showed Spencer all of the objects and then set him on the table so he could pick for himself. At first he just sat there staring at everyone wondering what in the world was going on, but it didn’t take him too long to spot the food. He reached for one of the red rice cakes and promptly stuck it in his mouth!
Afterwords we had a visit from Pinky Star the Clown, who did a fun magic show and then made crazy balloon hats for all the kids.
Spencer thought his was quite funny!
I was excited to find that I already owned a circus train cake pan and had fun putting my cake decorating skills to use…
I also made Spencer is own little personal cake which he had fun poking holes in and smashing all over his highchair. He really wasn’t that into eating it but he sure had fun playing with it!
All in all it was a great day!
